Germany is enforced to accept responsibility for starting the war, and has to pay huge economic apology's and give some of their land to the Allies.
Financial difficulty in the 1920's and 1930's caused by Germany losing WWI and the industrial disaster of the "Great Depression"
leads to a international public discontent in Germany.
1932-31 July- Nazi (national socialist) party lead by Adolf Hitler win 37% of vote, making them the biggest party in Reichstag (German Parliament)
1933- Jan 30- Hitler chosen as Chancellor of Germany
- Mar 20- Dachau concentration camp established for enemies of the Nazi Party
- April 26- Gestapo (Secret State Police) formed
- July 14- Nazi Party declared sole political party. Eastern Europeans Jewish immigrants have German citizenship taken away
1934- 30 June- Night of the long knives; Hitler purges (to clear away or wipe out legally) his political rivals.
Aug 2- German President (Von Hindenberg) dies. Adolf Hitler declares himself Fuhrer.
1935- 28 June- Homosexuality is criminalized in Europe.
15 Sep- The Nuremberg laws (two laws which excluded the Jews from German life) strip "dark skinned" people and Gypsies of citizenship as well as Jews and forbid any marriage between these people and German citizens.
1936- 17 June- Heinrich Himmler, the head of the Secret police, becomes the chief of police of all the states in Germany.
1-16 Aug- The Berlin Olympic games occur. Jesse Owens, a black athlete from the United States, does an outstanding job competing and embarrasses Hitler's government.
1937-15 July- A big concentration camp called Buchenwald opens in Germany.
1938- 12-14 Mar-Germany annexes Austria.
27 Oct - The Nazis expel and arrest 17 000 Polish Jews living in Germany.
9-10 Nov- Kristallnacht (night of the broken glass) occurs in Germany, Austria and Sudetenland. Jewish businesses, homes, shops and Synagogues were attacked, burned and looted. Approximately 100 Jews die. Also many are sent to concentration camps.
15 Nov- The Jewish students from German schools are expelled.
1939-24 Jan- Plans of getting rid of Jews through emigration start.
15 Mar- The Germans invade Czechoslovakia.
1 Sep- Germany invade Poland and World War II begins.
23 Nov- All the Jews that are 10 and over are forced to wear a white armband with the star of David on it.
1940-9 April- Germany invade Norway and Denmark.
30 April- Ghettos established in Poland.
10 May- Germany invade Belguim, The Netherlands, Luxembourg and France.
22 June - France surrender to Germany
